Which Stone is Right For Me

Granite, Marble, Travertine,
Limestone, Onyx, Quartzite, or Slate?
Natural stone is one of the most pleasing and practical materials available. Granite, Marble,
Travertine, Limestone, Onyx, Quartzite, and Slate all have their own individual strengths and
style. All come with nature's own reassurance of enduring quality.
GRANITE
A very hard stone formed by nature over hundreds of millions of years
from the Earth's molten core. It comes in a astonishing range of
colors, many with an attractive movement and some with almost holographic
sparkle and intensity of color. Granite can be supplied in
different finishes - high polish, matt or textured (flamed), depending on the
application. Its hard-wearing properties make it ideal for kitchen
worktops, bathrooms, and flooring. Interior and exterior.
MARBLE
Undeniably one of nature's most beautiful stones, marble is a form of limestone that is capable of being polished. It comes in a variety of
colors.
Marble is very suitable for bathrooms, fireplaces, flooring and walls. Being more porous than granite, if you are planning to use marble in your kitchen, you will need to take greater
care. Sealing is recommended. LIMESTONE
A sedimentary stone composed mainly of Calcium Carbonate.
Limestone generally doesn't take a polish. Limestone is widely used
in bathrooms and for flooring and often comes with fossils embedded in it.
Limestone is popular in
architecture and many landmarks around the world. Many medieval
churches and castles in Europe are made of limestone. Limestone
and marble are very reactive to acid solutions. Many limestone
statues and building surfaces have suffered damage due to
acid rain. For indoor applications, care must be taken in selecting a cleaning agent. Sealing
is highly recommended. TRAVERTINE
Travertine is a banded, compact variety of limestone formed along
streams, particularly where there are waterfalls and around hot or
cold springs. It is characterized by pitted holes and troughs in its
surface. These troughs occur naturally. Some people fill these holes
with grout, whereas others leave them open. Travertine can even be
purchased "filled" or "unfilled." It comes in a
variety of colors from grey to coral-red. Our new technique
called "brushed" has an attractive skid-prove texture.
The largest building in the world constructed largely of travertine
is the Colosseum
in Rome. Other notable buildings using travertine extensively
include the Sacré-Cœur
Basilica in Paris and the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California. SANDSTONE
Sandstone is a sedimentary stone composed mainly of sand-size
mineral or rock grains. Because of the hardness of the
individual grains, sandstones are resistant to weathering, yet are
easy to work. This makes sandstone a common building and paving
material since ancient times. For the first time, "Maestro
Mosaics" is introducing Sicilian sandstone used in colosseums
and historic sites in Sicily. Call us if you would like this special
sandstone for architectural moldings, pool copings and floors... for your special project. QUARTZ
Hard stone. Appropriate for both indoor
and outdoor in a cold climate. Quartz is a result from alteration of
sandstone by heat, pressure and chemical activity. Its texture is
excellent for a non-slip applications.
ONYX
Encyclopedias categorize Onyx as a type of gem stone. Gorgeous?
Dazzling? Exotic? No words can exactly explain the beauty of Onyx.
However, be cautious that it is a softer type of stone and can be
scratched. EXTRA CARE is needed in daily usages and cleaning. Great
for bathroom and powder room applications. SLATE
Slate is a sheared sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic
ash. This makes it possible to split slate into thin sheets. It has natural beauty while maintaining thermal stability and chemical
inertness, Slate is used for interior and exterior flooring, wall
cladding, as well as roof tile. Its rough texture is excellent for
non-slip applications. Not recommended for outdoor applications in a
freezing climate.
